Superversive Sunday Spotlight: Daniel Humphreys

Welcome to this week’s Superversive Sunday Spotlight. Every week we will chat with a Superversive author that you really should be reading.

This week we welcome Superversive author, Daniel Humphreys:

How long have you been writing?

I wrote my first short story in third or fourth grade and have been making stuff up ever since.

Which writers inspire you?

Dean Koontz and Jim Butcher are two of my favorites, but honestly, I’ll read pretty much anything from historical non-fiction to horror. My to-be-read stack beside my bed and on my Kindle are both embarrassingly huge.

So, what have you written?

Well, let’s see … I’ve got a trio of post-apocalyptic sci-fi books in the Z-Day series, I’ve completed four volumes of the Paxton Locke urban fantasy series, I’ve edited a Z-Day anthology, and I’ve contributed another handful of shorts to various anthologies.

What draws you to Superversive writing?

I think the biggest distinction to me is the sense of the positive. I want to tell stories about people standing up for what’s right, even in the midst of awful circumstances. Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but it just doesn’t sit right with me if a story doesn’t leave you feeling satisfied. I read a book not too long ago that all the critics just raved about, and it was so nihilistic that I finished it and just felt hollow inside. All of the characters died horribly or betrayed their own moral code, and the antagonist won. Even if it’s well-written, that’s a pointless journey for a reader.

What are you working on at the minute?

I’m about halfway done with the fifth Paxton Locke novel, The Dragon and His Wrath. I was hoping to be a bit further along, but coronavirus derailed our household around Thanksgiving and we’re just getting back into the swing of things.

Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?

See answer to which writers inspire me above.

How can readers discover more about you and your work?

You can find my blog at www.daniel-humphreys.net, and I Tweet from @NerdKing52. My Facebook fan page is The Books of Daniel Humphreys, and it mostly consists of memes and just fun stuff, but I do throw an update in there from time to time.

Thanks for sharing Daniel. Be sure to check out Daniel’s books and be sure to check back next Sunday for our next chat with a Superversive author.
