Without commenting on his guilt or innocence in this particular case and more of a general statement of athletes in general who are arrested, charged and eventually found guilty:
Seriously, what the hell people?
Former Baltimore Ravens safety Matt Elam was arrested and charged with, among other things, possession of marijuana with the intent to sell (read more here) in Miami. He is not the first nor, sadly, will likely not be the last athlete we’ll see in the papers in similar circumstances.
But I just don’t get it. Here are people who are been paid more money in just a couple of years than most of us will earn in an entire lifetime. Why are they involving themselves in illegal business deals that come with years of imprisonment? Do they need the money that bad? Do they need the adrenaline rush they get on the field 365 days a year so much they turn to something like this? Are they just plain stupid? Is it a combination of all of the above?
All the years I spent as a sports writer I have seen more stories like this one than I care to count and each time it both angers and saddens me.
Another waste of talent. Another wasted life.
