“Can’t we all just get along?”
It was the refrain born from the Rodney King riots so many years ago.
Today it should be: “Can we all just grow the hell up?”
Instead of talking to each other, whether we agree with them or not, we settle into our echo chambers. Only those that think exactly like us are allowed inside. Those that do not are called names: cuck, rethuglican, libtard, etc, etc.
This is the conduct of a child.
Instead of letting the other side speak their mind, and the other side returning the courtesy, so that common ground might be discovered, people are targeted for personal destruction using any means necessary to accomplish the goal. Oddly enough, they ignore the hypocrisy of savagely attacking the conduct of those they oppose while ignoring that same conduct in those that agree with their point of view.
This also is the conduct of a child.
And when destroying someone in public isn’t enough, some resort to gathering as a mob and destroying property belonging to people who had nothing to do with the issue at hand, blocking people from going peacefully about their daily lives and at times possibly placing people in harm’s way by keeping them from reaching a doctor or a hospital.
This is the conduct of a teenaged brat.
It’s time to grow up. It’s time to stop the name-calling. It’s time to stop the all-out assault of personal destruction. It’s time to stop the weekly march/protest/riot in the streets. It’s time to stop the politically-motivated lies about what really happened at an event/shooting/whatever the latest story at the top of the news cycle de jure might be.
It is time for both sides to shut up and listen for a change.
It is time to grow up.
